When it comes to my career, I’d say I’ve been lucky. It was a mix of hard work, big risks, and fortunate timing that landed me in a role that fits me perfectly. I always call it my dream job.
But for many, this might not be the case. So, how do you turn your current job into a dream job?
Perfect-fit jobs aren’t usually something you “get” as much as something you create. Here are my six quick tips to turn your job from “right now” to “oh-so-right”:
1. Be vocal about the tasks you enjoy. Don’t assume your boss knows what you like to do. Speak up about the tasks and projects that excite you. When you express your interests, you’re more likely to be assigned work that aligns with your passions, which can lead to greater job satisfaction and better performance.
2. Get proactive. Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you. Seek them out. Identify areas in your role where you can contribute more and take the initiative to get involved. This shows your boss that you’re eager to grow and take on more responsibility, making you a valuable asset to the team.
3. Don’t wait for permission to take on new tasks. If you see a need you can fill, just do it. Write the story. Make the video. Design the webpage. Even if your work isn’t used, you’ll show enthusiasm and dedication, and your boss may start to see you as a resource for those tasks in the future.
4. Talk to your boss about your goals. Your boss is busy, so you need to initiate important conversations. If you become a proactive employee who solves problems and alleviates your boss’s stress, you’ll naturally grow in your role.
5. Learn how to pitch an idea. Don’t just ask questions. Be a solutions person. If you have a big idea, prepare an amazing pitch and present it to your boss.
6. Most IMPORTANT “Practice gratitude”. No matter how frustrated you are with your current situation, try to feel gratitude for the opportunities you have. When you focus on being thankful for your work, you’re more likely to see and seize all the creative opportunities around you.
Now, it’s up to you to put these ideas into action.
